PPAQ AGM 2011 / John Reyment Studio Visit

John Reyment was kind enough to lend us his studio space for the evening in September to host the PPAQ AGM for 2011. John was also gracious enough to speak about his studio afterwards and divulge some of his ideas and secrets!
There were many Council Member changes including President Glen Knoblauch who resigned his position to Yohti Jenkins who took over the reins. Yohti's former position as Treasurer was taken over by Paul Copsey. Peter Let...heren was elected as Vice President. Kris Singleton & John Reyment resigned their positions as council members, replaced by Scott Lawler and Helen McConnell retained her position as council member also. Julie Collins was re-elected as Secretary.

It was another great night of inspiration and networking along with some socialising and laughs.
2012 is set to be a big one with many studio visits, seminars and more.....! Do join in even if you are a non-member.

May Studio Visit with Vivid Photography

Once again a happy and socialable bunch of photographers gathered together for a studio visit, this time to support the wonderful Cath and Richard Muldoon.

A great time was had by all. I think we spent more time than usual in the pre meeting gathering as we wandered from room to room viewing the gorgeous photos and albums on display and finding people we knew amongst the crowd. We had nearly 50 in attendance so the atmosphere in the studio was buzzing.

Cath and Richard shared from their heart in their relaxed and natural manner and didn't hold anything back when bombarded with questions. I think everyone was truly inspired by the end of the evening.

If you haven't had a chance to see the studio, it is certainly one that makes an impression. It is simple and modern in decor with the walls lined in award winning images. The studio is in a prime location being right on a main thoroughfair only minutes from the city.

We enjoyed pizza and heaps of nibbles and drinks as usual, however we also got to eat the yummy mud cake and cupcakes I made to celebrate Lesley's, Cassie's and my birthdays. We were each given a bottle of bubbly for a gift as well which was lovely. Thanks Glen!

Wedding Photography Central WPC - April Studio Visit

What an awesome night! A lot of socialising to start with as we all caught up with our friends and met new visitors... (we love getting new visitors and hope you feel very welcome!) We were comfortably spread out through the three studio/viewing rooms and verandah. There was 34 photographers in attendance so it was a great size studio to cater for such a large group.

The first thing you notice on entering the studio is the attention to detail and the feeling of opulence with the gorgeous chandeliers, striking wall paper and welcoming lounges. The walls are lined with stunning acrylics and many sample albums are available to view on the display cases. (Pls see their website for professional shots of the studio.)

Paula Gray and husband Leigh of 'That's Me Photography' in Heritage Park and Kris Singleton with wife Anna of 'Annielyn Images' in Toowoomba, are the founders of WPC. After years of friendship they've put their heads together and decided to join forces with a joint studio in the heart of Brisbane.

WPC is a base for them to see their clients for interviews, album plans etc. The two studios keep in contact with an online diary system so they always know what the other studio has planned and their wedding bookings etc. The two studios share the enquiries that come directly through WPC phone number and emails.

Although there was much query as to how the two studios co-exist happily, all questions were well answered by the end of the night. It's simple and effective and I wouldn't be surprised if more studios join forces to share the costs of rentals etc. It's definitely a great idea and both studios are functioning very well with this new joint system.

After an informal presentation by Kris and Paula, we all mingled again with more drinks and heaps of Pizza... yum! It's surprising how quickly those pizzas get gobbled up! heheh And a few wobbly legs left that night too! (You're identity will remain safe lol) I think they love the wine Glen...

Julie Collins Studio Visit

Wow what a woman! She's a little package but a whole lot of personality! Julie Collins from Julie Collins Photography hosted a terrific and entertaining night for about 30 of us at her home based studio in Heritage Park.

Julie shared with us about her humble beginnings not too long ago, to where she is today running a thriving business. Julie's fun and open personality would surely be a big selling point for her clients however her images are simply beautiful. Her studio has some stunning feature images to wow her clients as they sit in the warm and homely environment of her cosy meeting area.

Julie is the proud achiever of her first Silver award at the AIPP awards in Brisbane last year!... (the first of many ;) )

I have the pleasure of knowing Julie personally and think she is a fantastic and vibrant woman and feel the PPAQ is very lucky to have her on the council. Hopefully you'll get a chance to meet her and hear first hand about her journey in photography if you didn't have a chance to get to the studio visit.

On day two Sue Bryce http://suebryce.com/ visited us all the way from Sydney with an amazing overview of her Portrait Couture studio business. Sue is a renowned photographer in Australia and is quickly gaining a following of photographers all over the world. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed Sue's presentation, especially the beautiful fusion dvd. Sue creates this using a mixture of short video clips and stills to highlight her skills. It was very impressive and is a popular option for many photographers today who want to display the 'wow' factor. I have heard quite a few of Qld's female photographers have booked in with Sue to do one of her beautiful portrait shoots for the next time she visits (let us know how you go ladies).

Next Studio Visit - TWK - 1st March, 2011

The next studio visit will be held at TWK Studio on the 1st of March @ 6.00PM for a 7.00 start.
The studio is located at 101 Holland Rd. Holland Park.

TWK has mainly been a wedding studio since the mid 70’s and in the mid 80’s was shooting in the high 200’s weddings per year and even in today’s market is averaging over 80 per year at a much higher price.

This is quite an achievement and would be worth coming along to find out the TWK secret.

All bookings are via the PPAQ website http://www.ppaq.com.au/ and we will be limiting attendees to 25 so jump in quick.
Members will be $15 and non-members will be $25.

AGM and Chris Hall Studio Visit

Before the Studio Visit, the PPAQ members met for our Annual General Meeting at Chris Hall's Studio... (Thanks Chris for the use of your facilities and space).

We had an informative evening with Glen recapping on the past years events and achievments of the PPAQ and a fantastic financial report from Lesley.
Farewell's and gifts were given to four of our PPAQ council members who will no longer be on the council however we will still have the pleasure of seeing them at future events. A huge thank you to Lesley Downie, Syd Owens, Peter Williams, and Paula Gray for all your assistance in the past year in making the PPAQ what it is today.

Our new council has been appointed for the coming year and we are all very excited about what this new team will achieve and endevour to keep the standards that have already been set by the previous council and a certain key member, Lesley Downie who has dedicated many, many hours into the PPAQ.

Studio Visit
Another very successful Studio Visit took place at Chris Hall's Studio in Park Rd Milton.
After a short coverage by Chris of his journey to success he showed us a great new opportunity for our business's to grow with a referral system he created. I think many photographers were impressed and spent time after the meeting talking to his staff to set themselves up in the system. If any photographers couldn't make it to the Studio Visit or didn't get a chance to speak to one of the staff, please don't hesitate to contact Chris Hall's studio direct and they will be happy to help you.

Once again the great attendence of 50+ photographers, enjoyed an evening of plenty of drink, nibbles and Pizza Capers pizzas.

The Lightroom Seminar we hosted recently was very successful. Our lovely lecturer David Harridine was well received and we are all thankful for the fantastic lessons he conducted over the course of the day. The PPAQ concillors were very happy with the turn out of nearly 70 people. We see this as a great indication to the growing success and relevance of the PPAQ for studios,photographers and creative artists in our industry today.

Master Lightroom is a full day of high powered Lightroom training covering the essential information required to wrap your head around this revolutionary application, as well as the powerful techniques required to give you full control.

Session One -
Overview and orientation with the workspace, importing protocol and catalogue management, including shooting tethered.

Session Two -
Interrogation of the Develop Module, exploring every tool and option including sharpening and camera calibration

(it's serious business being a photographer)

After our courtyard mingling we headed inside to hear Helen share her story of how she use to be a Court Reporter for the Supreme and District Courts, and the journey she undertook to get where she is today. It was very informative and her bright, bubbly personality kept us all intrigued as we sat in her beautifully decored studio. To finish off her presentation we had the pleasure of viewing her beautiful slide show of weddings. Helen really strikes me as a woman who is the true representation of a passionate photographer. It was so evident as she spoke of her clients and shooting weddings, just how much she loves her job. Helen refers to herself as a 'specialist wedding photographer' as this is the main thing she does and she does it superbly.

Her business has grown so much over the last six years that she now employs a personal assistant Ruth, who is training up to be a wonderful shooter for Helen as well. I also have to mention her partner Mark as Helen talks very highly of him being a huge part in the success of her business. She said he gave her so much encouragment in the early days and continues to be one of her biggest fans. I'm sure though that Helen has many more fans amongst us. If you don't yet know Helen, she is a woman who will make you laugh, inspire you, encourage you and support you and is one who is a great example of how to run a successful photography business. Thanks Helen for just being you.

After the presentation we all 'elegantly' pigged out on pizzas and talked some more till the late hours of the night. (I haven't got a photo of that as I was too busy eating hehe)...

"Sterling Studios" Studio Visit

On the 12th May we had a huge turn out of nearly 50 people (the biggest attendance ever) at the 'Sterling Studios' Studio Visit which was hosted by the very talented staff of Chris, Sonia and Glen. We have received many positive comments saying it was one of the best studio visits ever and how much fun was had.

Sterling Studios was originally founded 34 years ago by Glen Knoblauch who is now a highly respected leader in our industry. The Studio itself is situated in a beautifully renovated Queenslander in the inner city suburb of Coorparoo which is a very appealing position for prospective clients from all parts of Brisbane. The Studio has a lovely foyer area, a wedding client viewing room, a portrait client viewing room, an office, a portrait studio and processing rooms. However that's not all! The back yard is a fully functional outdoor studio extravaganza... The feature backdrop is 150+ year old walls from the wool shed buildings which was custom made to withstand any storm as a permanent fixture. There is also a cubby house/ play area, a colourful garage wall and landscaped gardens with pathways to top it off. Wow! That's all very impressive and from the moment you walk in the front door of the studio foyer you realise that it has an image of class and sophistication. The many award prints and trophies proudly displayed are evident of the quality which has been achieved and refined over the years.

Chris gave a very informative outline of their studio activities, featuring the modern way of doing album planning and many people were keen to ask questions and find out more. It was a wonderful opportunity to sit and listen to someone with so much experience and success and to be able to take home some key points to help in our own business.

After the presentation was wrapped up with a beautfiul slide show

we socialised with steaming hot pizzas,

heaps of alcohol and other yummy stuff.

We had quite a few first time visitors, including the Qld AIPP President, Melinda Comerford and our new PPAQ members and we hope that you all felt very welcomed

and made some new contacts and friends.

For those of you who attended our first Lightroom Seminar last year, you know the incredible value firsthand and won't want to miss this one, and for those of you who didn't, you simply must book it in your diary and rsvp as a priority.

This second Lightroom seminar with David Harradine is pitched at intermediate to advanced techniques. There are notes supplied which allows you a more comprehensive learning experience on the day.

12th of July (tentatively at the Queens Arms Hotel James St Fortitude Valley)
Registration at 8.30am and a 9.00am start and will go until 5or 6.00PM

Morning tea, Lunch & Afternoon tea included.

The costs will be $95 for members and $150 for non-members. (Normally pay approx $300 for this seminar)

Firstly Welcome to the New and official PPAQ blog. Blogs seem to be very popular these days and we feel that it is a great way to keep our members and non-members up to date with what is happening. We will be posting dates for our exciting upcoming events which will consist of seminars, workshops and studio visits. There will be reviews and images of these events as they take place. Also keep your eye out for the wonderful studio profiles which will feature our very special members. It is great to see what other studios are doing and to support our fellow photographers.

United together in the PPAQ we will see this creative industry of talented and gifted people excell both personally and as a whole in the photography industry of Queensland. We will continue to strive to achieve more than we believe possible as we learn and grow in our profession and provide our clients with the most amazing images they could have imagined. The PPAQ will be a vital tool to see this happen as you will benefit from the valuable learning made possible at the seminars or workshops and the first hand experience from your collegues as they open up their studios and business practises for everyone to take away important information or advice. Not to mention the amazing friendships and support which I am sure you have all already experienced.

Many of you are current members and possibly some of you are still yet to apply for membership, however I would like to introduce your council members in case you don't yet know them all. Our president is Glen Knoblauch and he is doing an amazing job hand in hand with our Treasurer Lesley Downie. Together after many hours of hard work they have revived the PPAQ in the last two years to the strong foundation it is today. We then have Syd Owen as our Vice President who dilligently travels from Toowoomba for our meetings every month. The lovely Ms Paula Gray is our Secretary along with councillors Pete Williams and myself Yohti Jenkins to make up a strong force of six 'go get em' photographers to lead our wonderful team of members to great things in Queensland Photography!
